Even if one chooses to become a doctor or engineer, it is extremely important to study subjects of Liberal Arts such as literature, philosophy and history to keep connected with the society and with oneself, in turn. This was stated by renowned poet and writer, Dr Amit Ranjan at an International Symposium on ‘Literature and the Contemporary Society’ organized today at Jawahar Kala Kendra as a part of its literature activities. He was speaking on the topic ‘Are we too whirred for words?’

He further said that literature is the mirror of the society. However, today we are forming opinions based on what we see on social media rather than research-based works. Even though there is nothing wrong with using new technology and social media, we need to learn to adapt to it and use social media more productively.

Talking on the topic ‘Literature and Society : A project of Cosmopoetics or Cosmopolitics?’, Professor Stephanos Stephanides from Cyprus said that a culture cannot be created till a language is developed and memory is an inevitable factor for this. From oral to print to new media, literature is an ever-changing domain. In the second session there was poetry recital and discussion. Dr Ranjan recited poems from his collection ‘Find me Leonard Cohen, I’m almost Thirty’.
