The publishers of the bestselling
Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls have released a new book this month, further sowing the seeds of gender equality in young children.
Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is a
children’s bookwhich contains the stories of 100 real women in the format of a bedtime story. From Elizabeth I to Serena Williams, the book highlights the achievements of real women and is a refreshing change from the traditional gender roles usually depicted in fiction.
However, traditional gender roles are harmful to both sexes and feeling a need to show boys a different way to be masculine, the book’s tagline is, “True tales of amazing boys who changed the world without killing dragons”.
“All of the focus has been on girls, which is great, and necessary,” said Quercus Books nonfiction publisher Katy Follain, to Guardian Books. “But statistics show that male suicide is on the rise, and the more I looked into it, the more I thought there was something there for boys.”
The new book is called
Stories for Boys Who Dare to Be Different andThe blurb reads, “Prince charming, dragon slayer, mischievous prankster… More often than not, these are the role-models boys encounter in the books they read at home and at school. As a boy, there is an assumption that you will conform to a stereotypical idea of masculinity.
But what if you’re the introvert kind? What if you prefer to pick up a book rather than a sword? What if you want to cry when you’re feeling sad or angry? What if you like the idea of wearing a dress?”
The book, written by
Ben Brooks, tells us the tales of men like Galileo Galilei, Louis Braille, King George VI, Jamie Oliver etc. The book released on 3rd April, 2018 and it’s already the #1 new release on Amazon and a bestseller on Amazon.co.uk.
