A previously unpublished short story by Sylvia Plath will soon be published for the first time by UK based publishing house Faber & Faber. Titled Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom, the short story is expected to be out in January 2019.
Sylvia Plath was one of United States’ most tragic poets. She committed suicide at the age of 30 in 1963, a month after her novel The Bell Jar was published with the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. After her untimely death, it was the publication of her posthumous collections of poetry Ariel in 1965 which established her as an important poet of the 20th century.
And now, Faber & Faber will print Plath’s unpublished short story Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom which was written in 1952. The story was originally written when Plath was a student in the US. Though it is noted that Plath had revised it in 1954 when she made Marcia Ventura the protagonist of her story.
Plath’s Mary Ventura and the Ninth Kingdom will now be published as a part of the Faber Stories series to mark Faber & Faber’s 90th anniversary which falls in 2019. Some other stories which will also be published along with Plath’s are Come Rain or Come Shine by Kazuo Ishiguro, Mr. Fox by Sarah Hall, A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor among a dozen others.
