HYDERABAD:Even as slanging match between India and
Pakistan continues there are occasional moments that defy the bitter trend. Here is a fresh example.
Two
Urdu writers from Hyderabad — Mohammad Mujeeb Ahmad and Prof Mohammad Baig Ehsas —have received recognition for their works by two different literary organizations in Pakistan.
A literary organization based in
Gujranwala, a city located close to
Lahore, has selected Mujeeb Ahmad’s book, a collection of afsanas (short stories) as one of the three best books of 2017. The 52-year-old Ahmad is a teacher by profession. He is an acclaimed writer. The book titled ‘ Mere dukh ki dawa karey koi’has 19 stories that deal with the issues faced by women. He has so far published seven books, some of which have received awards by
Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh Urdu academies. “I had been invited by Al Fanoos to the award distribution function which was held in May last. I could not go because of some personal issues,” Ahmad said.
On the other hand, Chahar Soo, a leading literary magazine, has brought out a special edition on Baig Ehsas who has won Sahitya Academy Award for 2017. The magazine (May/ June) published from Rawalpindi has a pencil sketch of Ehsas on its cover and carried his indepth interview which is spread over 40 pages. It has also carried a critical essay on Qurratul Ain Hyder and an award winning afsana, Dukhma (a place on a hillock where Parsis keep bodies of the dead ones).
“It is honour to be recognised this way by an internationally known literary magazine. I have received about a dozen copies of the special issue…Of course, it gives a good feeling when your contribution to the literature is acknowledged,” Ehsas, who has taught at
Osmania University and University of Hyderabad, said.
