Kozhikode: Noted Malayalam writer Punathil Kunjabdulla is no more. He was suffering from age-related illnesses for long and breathed his last at a private hospital Friday morning. He was 75. He was one of the pioneers in bringing in modernity to Malayalam literature. He had written 7 novelettes and 15 collection of short stories. Some of his other noted works include: Marunnu, Paralokam, Punathilinte Novellakal, Kanyavanangal, Agnikinavukal and Ammaye Kaanan. He also written a novel ‘Navagrahangulude Thadavara’ along with prominent writer Sethu. Short story collections include: Aligarh Kathakal, Kathi, Marichupoya Ente Appanammamarkku , Malamukalile Abdulla and Ente Priyapetta Kathakal. He had won the Kendra Sahithya Academy Award for his novel Smarakasilakal (Memorial Stones) in 1980. He had won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978 for Smarakasilakal and 1980 for Malamukalile Abdulla. He also received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2010. He was also a doctor by profession. Born in Onchiyam in Kozhikode, he completed his MBBS from Aligarh Muslim University. He worked as a government doctor from 1970 to 1973 and from 1974 to 1996 he ran a private nursing home. Later from 1999, he worked as a medical officer in a tribal belt in Wayanad.
