A new anthology of short stories titled The Penguin Book of the Contemporary British Short Story will feature stories by authors such as Zadie Smith, Irvine Welsh and Neil Gaiman. Published by Penguin Random House (PRH), the anthology is said to be “a literary treasure trove” of “30 great short stories published in the last 20 years”.

The book of short stories has been edited by Philip Hensher, who also curated the stories. The first volume — The Penguin Book of the British Short Story — was published in 2015, which was also edited by Henser. Apparently, Henser had to read hundreds of “contemporary” short stories to go about his selection for the new volume.

The other writers featured in the anthology are Kazuo Ishiguro, Ali Smith, A L Kennedy, Tessa Hadley, Graham Swift, Jane Gardam, Neil Gaiman, Martin Amis, China Mieville, Peter Hobbs, Thomas Morris, David Rose, David Szalay, Lucy Caldwell, Rose Tremain, Helen Oyeyemi, Leone Ross, Helen Simpson, Will Self, James Kelman, Lucy Wood, Hilary Mantel, Eley Williams, Sarah Hall, Mark Haddon and Helen Dunmore. These are all enormous names in the literary world.

Allen Lane, an imprint of PRH, will publish The Penguin Book of the Contemporary British Short Story on October 4, 2018 as a hardcover edition.
