The passing of satirist and biographer Vinod Bhatt marks the end of an era in Gujarati literature. People from all walks of life paid rich tribute to Bhatt, author of dozens of Gujarati books and weekly columns in Gujarati newspapers. Those who paid tribute include Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as well as Congress leaders Amit Chavda, Arjun Modhwadia and Paresh Dhanani.

Close friend and fellow satirist Ratilal Borisagar said that Vinod Bhatt was unique in the sense that he did not get influenced by other writers and no one will ever be able to step into his shoes. Borisagar termed Bhatt’s death as an end of an era in Gujarati literature, likening him with legends such as Jyotindra Dave and Bakul Tripathi.

“It was said about the Gujarati poet of medieval literature, Shyamal Bhatt, that he never followed anyone and no one will ever be able to follow him. The same thing is applicable to Bhatt. Despite being mentored by Jyotindra Dave, Bhatt had his unique style of writing. As a person, Bhatt had depth, a lovable, selfless nature and a soft heart. He was disturbed with the contradictions in society, but reflected them through humour in his writings,” Borisagar told DNA.

Gujarati humourist and author Niranjan Trivedi said that he had extremely close relations with Vinod Bhatt and for many years, they, along with Vinod Jani, used to spend time together. Trivedi had mentioned this in the special Diwali edition of ‘Gujarat’ by the Information Department. Coordinator of Ahmedabad-based Om Communication, Manish Pathak said that Bhatt was known for his sense of humour and his column ‘Idam Trutiyam’ in Gujarati newspapers. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani expressed his condolences for the death of Vinod Bhatt and said that he had a unique style of reflecting the realities of life through his satires, essays and books. It would be difficult to fill the void created by his absence in Gujarati literature, he added.
