Presently, Chirayinkeezhu Prem Nazir Memorial Govt. HS School is the only memorial that enlivens his memories.
Kozhikode: A monument for Prem Nazir, the evergreen actor of Malayalam film industry, still remains a dream. Only the plans to build a monument are in progress even after 28 years of his demise, complains his daughter Laila Nazir.
Presently, Chirayinkeezhu Prem Nazir Memorial Govt. HS School is the only memorial that enlivens his memories. The changing governments in power have given promises but nothing happened yet. There were some failed attempts to acquire land for the construction of a monument under Prem Nazir Foundation.
Beginning from the 1952 movie ‘Marumakal’, Prem Nazir has been an active presence in the Malayalam film industry. He played the lead role in 725 movies. He holds two world records, one for playing the lead role in most number of films and the second one for acting with the same heroine in most number of films and the second one for acting with the same heroine in most number of films. He had shared screen space with Sheela in 130 movies. Nazir also owns a national record of acting as hero with 80 heroines. Though he had all these achievements, the cultural community of Kerala has taken zero effort to preserve his memories, she said.
Prem Nazir had won Padmabhushan and Padmasree in his life time, but presently there is no proper place to protect and display his pictures, and the awards and honours he received. His son Shanavas takes care of all these properties. Nazir’s family wish to exhibit these possessions for the public.
The UDF government had granted a 5 cent plot under government ownership in Thiruvananthapuram city for constructing a monument. Later, they used it for some other project, said Thalekkunil Basheer, a relative of Nazir and the patron of the foundation. He added that presently there is a plan to acquire the land close to Chirayinkeezhu school for the purpose.
